Generally all Foreign Nationals who wish to travel in India are required to possess a genuine and valid passport of their distinct country and a valid Indian Visa obtained from an Indian Mission or Post abroad. Most nationalities need to apply for a valid visa or any other internationally recognized travel document forming his/her nationality and identity and bearing photograph of the foreigner in certain cases in advance to enter India.

Nepal and Bhutan nationalities do not require a visa in passport for entering into India by land or air from the Nepal or Bhutan border respectively. However, they are required to possess, their passport or any other authorized identity proof. However both the nationalities need to possess their passport only if they are entering India from a place other than their own country.

Lately, the Govt. of India has introduced Tourist Visa-on-Arrival which will be valid for entry and stay into India within the period of its validity subject to conditions specified. A Tourist Visa-on-Arrival shall be granted to a foreign national of Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Finland, Laos, Philippines, Cambodia, Luxembourg and New Zealand by the Immigration officer. These foreign nationals can get a maximum validity of 30 days Tourist Visa on arrival with single entry facility by the Immigration officer at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata Airports only.
