Gleneagles named
‘Best Golf Resort in the World’ for third year

The Gleneagles Hotel was this week named ‘Best Golf Resort in the World’ for the third year running at The 2014 UltraTravel 100 Awards.

The prestigious awards were voted for by UltraTravel readers, with other shortlisted properties including La Manga Club in Spain; PebbleBeach in the US; St Andrews; and Sandy Lane in Barbados.

The award comes as the Perthshire resort prepares to host the 40th Ryder Cup Matches from 26-28 September 2014, and celebrate its 90th anniversary on 6 June.

Bernard Murphy, Gleneagles’ General Manager, commented on the win: “It’s a tremendous honour to have been voted the world’s best golfing resort, and I’m very grateful to all those who voted for Gleneagles, and the staff whose hard work made this achievement possible. It’s a boon for Gleneagles, but also for Scottish golf tourism in general. We will continue to strive for excellence in all we do throughout this very exciting year, as we prepare to welcome golf’s greatest players in September for The Ryder Cup.”

Gleneagles is home to three award-winning courses – The King’s, The Queen's and The PGA Centenary course – as well as Scotland’s PGA National Academy for golf tuition. The resort's first golf courses, designed by James Braid, opened in 1919, five years before the hotel opened in 1924.

There's no game like golf: You go out with three friends, play eighteen holes, and return with three enemies.

Golf Tip
Part I: Before You Swing
Lesson #6: Don't Toe The Line

I can't tell you how many times I've seen players - both pros and amateurs - check their alignment by setting a club along the line that connects their toes. In my view, that's a mistake.

The reason is that most players tend to flare open one or both of their feet. Most common is the flared left foot, which brings the left toe back four or five centimeters from the target line. The result is that, if you lay a club down from toe to toe, that line will point well left of target, and will not reflect your actual alignment. Your hips, knees, and shoulders may be perfectly square, but the flared toe line will make you look open.

A more precise way to check alignment is to lay the club along your heel line. As your toes flare, your heels remain on line, so the line that connects your heels will accurately reflect the actual alignment of your feet.

The India adventure was truly outstanding. We must admit India challenged us on many levels and often, we were taken out of our comfort zone. Our senses were ignited on every level. With that being said, it was a wonderful experience that rewarded us with new perspectives on our lives and the lives of others on the planet. We have incredible memories that we will cherish forever.

Thank you Allan and Terri and Arif for making this a superb trip and for all your many months of behind the scenes planning.
