Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri voted Asian Tour Players' Player of the Year

Ace Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri was Monday added another feather to his cap when he was voted the 2014 Players’ Player of the Year for his wonderful exploits on the Asian Tour where he clinched two titles and finished second on the Order of Merit list.

The talented Indian claimed his first title outside India when he eagled the 72nd hole at the Indonesian Masters before going on to claim his second win of the year at the Venetian Macau Open. That title increased his tally to five Asian Tour titles.

In a very highly successful season, Lahiri contended for the Asian Tour Order of Merit crown but eventually lost out to David Lipsky of the United States, who sealed the win in the second last event on the 2014 season at the Thailand Golf Championship.

But Lahiri’s efforts earned plaudits by his peers who recognised his efforts and battling spirit in a stellar year where he notched six other top-10 results.

The Indian was delighted with the announcement. “I feel honoured and privileged to be chosen by my friends and competitors for this award. The previous recipients of this award include legends of Asian golf like Jeev (Milkha Singh) and Thongchai (Jaidee) and it’s inspiring to be counted among them,” Lahiri said in a release.

"It’s really very special when your peers confer an honour upon you. I feel deeply honoured by the faith they have shown in me. Last year was truly a special year for me and I hope to kick on and continue to play positively in 2015 both in Asia and in Europe," he added.

The 27-year-old played a key role at the inaugural EurAsia Cup where he was mainly instrumental in helping Team Asia secure a dramatic 10-10 tie against Team Europe, which featured five players in the successful Ryder Cup team.
“There were many great moments for me in 2014,” he recollected. “The two wins in Indonesia and Macau were very special, especially the final putt in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters. Getting my card in Europe at Qualifying School was a big relief having to make a comeback down the last few holes,” he explained.

“But the best moments of the year have to be the EurAsia Cup. Making the final putt to win our match in the Foursomes, partnering Siddikur was my most memorable moment of 2014. It gave us the boost to play our hearts out in the Sunday singles,” said Lahiri, who contributed two points in the match-play event.

Australia’s Cameron Smith was also named the Rookie of the Year for a commendable season.

Golf Tip
Part I: Before You Swing
Lesson #13: Open Up On Short Irons

Ben Hogan had the right attitude on short-iron shots. He said, "I want to be known as the man who hit them the straightest, not the longest."

The 8-iron, 9-iron, and wedges are the control clubs, after all, so there's no point in trying to slug them. I do give these irons a full swing, but I enhance my control with an important change at address. Whereas I address the longer clubs in a square stance - my feet, knees, hips, and shoulders aligned parallel to a line extending from my ball to my target - on the short irons, I open things up a bit. I pull my left foot back a few centimetres from that parallel line, thus rotating my hips, knees, and shoulders a few degrees counterclockwise so that I'm aligned a bit to the left of my target.

This stance facilitates a more upright backswing and a more descending attack on the ball which, on the 8-iron, 9-iron, and wedges, will encourage a straight or softly left- to-right shot with a high, soft trajectory yet lots of backspin on landing.
Thanks a lot for all the assistance and arrangements for our tour. No issues faced at all, Hope to meet you again soon.

Thanks again
