Experience a slice of paradise at Ooty
Golfing is even more a heavenly experience, if it takes an ardent golfer to a place that, literally speaking, is a slice of heaven itself. The southern state of Tamil Nadu in India has one such hill offering called Ooty, which is popularly known as the queen of hills. Curiously enough, this slice of paradise remained unknown to the great southern dynasties and it was the British who discovered it in the early 1800s.

Located in the blue Mountains of the Western Ghats at an altitude of 2,240 metres (7,350 feet) above sea level, Ooty is best known for its picturesque mountains, great lakes, dense forests, sprawling grasslands, miles of tea gardens and eucalyptus trees that draws a large number of Indian and International tourists every year.

Ooty, literally speaking, serves as the headquarter of one of the oldest mountain ranges, located at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka called the Nilgiri’s. It’s among the 14 hotspots of the world because of its unique bio-diversity and will surely lure a golfer to nearby Coonoor and Kotagiri hill stations, in close proximity to Ooty.

Anirban Lahiri wins second European Tour title in playoff

Local favourite Anirban Lahiri won a playoff against compatriot SSP Chawrasia to claim his second European Tour title in two weeks at the Indian Open on Sunday.

Beginning a dramatic day seven shots behind overnight leader Chawrasia, Lahiri carded two-under 69 and benefited from his opponent's meltdown to join him at seven under par and force the playoff.

Chawrasia slumped to a 76 and watched helplessly as Lahiri denied him his third European Tour title by rolling in a 15-foot birdie to clinch the playoff.

"It's incredible - starting today I didn't really think I had a chance," Lahiri, who was four-over after his first 10 holes in the tournament, told reporters.

"It was one of the toughest days ever that I've played golf at Delhi Golf Club and I'm really happy to have accomplished this: it's a childhood dream," said Lahiri who won his maiden European Tour title in Malaysia a fortnight ago.

"There were about eight of us who could have pulled through so I feel really lucky and fortunate, and really happy," added the 27-year-old, who could move to just outside the top 30 in the world rankings and looks certain to earn a U.S. Masters invitation in April.

Chawrasia began the day with a two-shot lead over holder Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh who won the tournament two years ago before it was co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

Sweden's Joakim Lagergren, Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng, Sri Lanka's Mithun Perera and Australian Marcus Fraser finished on six under.

Chawrasia dropped three shots in his opening four holes to hand the lead to Rahman but the Bangladeshi also wilted under pressure, returning 76 to finish five-under overall.

Lahiri climbed to second place in The Race to Dubai.

"It's hard to come to terms with," he said.

"Just six months back I was in Spain at Qualifying School and really relieved having stared at not having my card with five holes to go, so it feels like I’ve skipped a couple of steps to get to where I am right now.

"It's obviously a fantastic feeling and hopefully I can keep playing well through the year."

Golf Tip
Part I: Before You Swing
Lesson #14: The Right Height

The traditional advice has been that you should tee your ball so that its equator is even with the top of your driver. These days, that's too simplistic. Metal woods, which are now used by nearly every golfer, have a lower center of gravity than old wood-headed clubs, which means you'll usually want to tee the ball a bit below the 'equator' guideline.

Tee height also depends to some degree on the nature of your swing. If you're a sweeper of the ball you probably prefer a slightly high tee, to give you the feeling of staying behind and under the ball. A more downward hitter, on the other hand, will generally opt for a slightly lower tee to encourage the strong lateral move to the left that creates the down-and-through type of impact.

It's fine to begin with the equator rule, but you may be cheating yourself if you don't experiment a bit with higher and lower tees until you pinpoint the ideal height for your swing and your club.
The India adventure was truly outstanding. We must admit India challenged us on many levels and often, we were taken out of our comfort zone. Our senses were ignited on every level. With that being said, it was a wonderful experience that rewarded us with new perspectives on our lives and the lives of others on the planet. We have incredible memories that we will cherish forever.

Thank you Allan and Terri and Arif for making this a superb trip and for all your many months of behind the scenes planning.
